Our Story

Many people have expressed interest in how Brimming with Love began. So here's our story!

Brimming with Love was born in April of 2002. During that Spring, Brimming with Love's founder, Laura Griffin, was participating in a leadership program at a place called Landmark Education in Dallas. Individuals in this program created community projects that moved, touched, & inspired them. One evening, Laura saw a program on cable television featuring a chemotherapy hat-making program in Oregon. She was touched by the difference that such a small act made for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy & radiation. The smiles on their faces spoke volumes. Wouldn't it be wonderful to bring this kind of a program to Dallas-Ft. Worth? Laura immediately decided to "steal" the idea! She contacted local hospitals & the American Cancer Society to find out if there was a need for such a program, and the reply was a resounding "Yes!" Having just begun to sew herself, Laura began contacting others that might want to join her cause. She soon discovered that she was not alone in her desire to make a difference….

The Tejas Girl Scout Council was the first to join the cause in April 2002. Several troops from across the Metroplex participated in sewing classes to learn how to make basic "Comfort Cap" hats. These were taken to our first delivery to Parkland Memorial hospital in June 2002. As word spread about the project, we began to obtain individual donations of material scraps, yarn, & supplies. Local companies such as ALS Embroidery & Cutting Corners began donating fabric & hats, and our volunteer base began to grow. Currently, volunteers range in age from 5 - 82. Some dedicate their time to sewing, knitting, or crocheting. Others teach classes on hat-making. Still others use their PR skills or plan fabric drives. Even 5 year-olds can help by tracing, cutting out & decorating hat tags for each hat. There's something for everyone!

Since our first delivery, Brimming with Love has donated hundreds of hats to nine different cancer facilities in the Metroplex including Parkland Memorial, Baylor Sammons Cancer Center, Presbyterian Hospital, Children's Medical, St. Paul's, Moncrief Cancer Center, Cook's Medical Center,JPS Cancer Center & Richardson Cancer Center. As we expand our capabilities, we will service additional hospitals on an on-going basis. Thanks to all of you that have made this project a success!
